Embrace the Darkness

Danilo Thomain’s wine makes our collective head spin and we hope you take a chance on it this spooky season! Whether you’re in search for a post Trick or Treat glass, or a bottle to pair with your next viewing of the Exorcist, this bottle will help you embrace the dark side!

We like to think we’re a light hearted bunch here at Legacy, and sometimes life presents an opportunity to do something a little less serious. With the nights growing longer, and Halloween around the corner, we dusted off the cobwebs on an old favorite that just happens to be thematic.

Enfer d’Arvier, or “The Hell of Arvier” is the second-highest winegrowing zone in the Valle d’Aosta. It’s an extremely steep amphitheater overlooking the Dora Baltea river. The region coined it’s name from the incredibly drastic change in temperature, with scorching heat during the day, and bone chilling nights. These huge shifts help the wine balance the ever important tug of war between structure and acidity.

Danilo Thomain is an anomaly in this region, as he is the only independent producer of wine, and this is the only wine he bottles. Everything in the area that he doesn’t use is sold to the local co-op and consumed locally. Only a few hundred cases are made annually, and just over half of that is brought in to the US. His wine is one of very few ways in the modern world to try something truly singular.

The wine is made of predominately Petit Rouge, a local variety in the area generally known for an intensity of blue and red fruits. The expression made by Thomain is a case study in balance, as it carries both an incredible intensity as well as an effortless delicacy. As the sun sets earlier, and the nights grow longer, the desire for fuller reds grows, and this for sure fits the bill.

We have a wine for you today that we submit into the spotlight of awareness even knowing it may eventually not need us anymore. All birds must leave the nest at some point, but hopefully light enough that they can begin to fly.

We debated at length which winery and which wines to include in our first email offer. Since launching Legacy our intentions have been clear: bring to light producers and bottles which themselves represent Legacies being written in the wine world. We’re seeking small, family-owned wineries that our members cannot find elsewhere, but absolutely need to learn about.
